How to Choose Your Family Photographer | Houston Family Photographer

Once you have decided to establish a family tradition of having professional photos each year, you are probably overwhelmed by all the choices of family photographers out there. Before you make any investment, let me help you with finding the perfect photographer whom you connect with.

How to Choose Your Family Photographer | Fall Mini Session | Houston Family Photographer | Teresa Yiu Photography

1) THE STYLE

Now with the popularity of digital cameras, anyone can claim themselves a photographer. Then, why would you even bother investing in professional portraits? Because everyone (whether hobbyist or professional) has their own unique style. It is easy to use extensive and colorful props, but not everyone can skillfully control the light and composition, and sparkle the connection in your portraits. I often call photography an art, because a piece of art can touch the deepest part of your heart, inspire and give you a new perspective. The next question is , how do you know what style you’re most drawn to? Look around your house, the colors of your walls, your furniture, your decoration. Do you find a unified theme? Are you more drawn to modern, minimalistic, and clean design? Or do you find more neutral colors, texture of wood, and lots of white space in your house? These artistic images resulting from your family photo sessions should align with the overall theme of your house, because they will eventually become part of the decoration on your walls for the years to come.

2) THE PHOTOGRAPHER

Once you’ve narrowed down your list, you should read the About Page of the photographers and get a good sense of their personality. Visit their blog and social media posts as well. Are they friendly, patient, and loving? Do you share anything with them in common? Do you value what they value? I’m so proud to say, all my clients are loving, polite and kind-hearted, who value their family so much that they are willing to make sacrifices to provide the best for their children. Because like-minded people work best together. If you aren’t sure, it always helps to schedule a some phone call and chat with the photographer.

3) THE COST

I leave this consideration to the last for a purpose. You’re probably thinking if you can’t afford even your favorite photographer, why waste time researching about them?Because professional photography is indeed an investment. Before I go into details, ladies, let’s talk about shopping! How often do you shop? How much do you spend each time? To be honest with you, I don’t shop for clothes/shoes/handbags year-round. Maybe once or twice a year. My fashion style doesn’t change: I always shop for soft and neutral colors with timeless design.  So I can invest in good quality products that can last for a long time. I view family photos the same way too. You only get them done once a year, that means you basically have 12 months to save up for the photographer you so admire. The good news is, many high-end photographers are running mini sessions this time of the year, so you can hire the photographer you connect with for the portraits that match with your style at the cost you’re able to afford!

Establishing A Family Tradition | Houston Family Photographer

“Sometimes the smallest things take up the most room in your heart” -Winnie the Pooh

Because of the smallest things in my heart, i.e. my children, I am willing to make radical changes in my life, to be sacrificial, courageous and adventurous. Everyday, I hold myself accountable to intentionally speak love, act in love, make and preserve our memories together.

What about you? What take up most room in YOUR heart? How would you like to preserve your memories for the years to come?

Early in my career, I made a decision to focus on newborn photography, as I would love to be the photographer capturing the fresh beginning of your family. But what do you do next? Let me tell you, children grow up fast and you will be amazed at how much they change each year. That is the main reason why a lot of my newborn clients are returning to take family photos every year.

If you are a new parent, I strongly recommend you establish a family tradition of hiring a professional photographer for family pictures every year. I promise you, your investment today will be treasured for many years to come. Now is the perfect time to BOOK your fall mini session in the sun-soaked field. RESERVE YOUR SESSION NOW.

Dreamy Baby Boy Photos | Houston Newborn Photographer

Freshness. Endless possibilities. Boundless joy. I love newborns as they give us a hope for the future. As many of us are still recovering from the storm, whether financially or emotionally, I pray that this dreamy gallery of Baby Dylan will give you a new perspective on life.

I met Dylan while he was still in his mother’s womb. His parents researched extensively on newborn photography and finally decided to visit my studio, as they were attracted to the simple and fresh newborn photos on my website. They would like their newborn boy to be photographed in simple colors and props, so the focus would be on the baby himself, presented in artistic portraits. They love neutral colors, coordinating creamy white and gray wrapped poses, and of course, the moon prop. I added chunky, fluffy, and silky wools to enhance the texture, with a few simply white setups.

The whole session was as smooth as you could dream of, and the images just make you want to drift to Dylan’s dreamland. I pray that whatever situation you are in right now, you will have peace in your heart and be able to have a good night’s sleep. Trust me, things will get better before you know it. Treasure your family and love them well.

3 Parenting Tips I Learned from THSC Convention | Houston Family Photographer

5 Parenting Tips I Learned from THSC Convention | Houston Family Photographer | Teresa Yiu Photography

“Behold, children are a heritage and gift from the Lord, the fruit of the womb a reward.” Psalm 127:3

I recently attended the 3-day THSC Convention in Woodlands and I came home with my body totally exhausted, but my mind filled with ideas, my heart overflown with love, and my soul deeply refreshed. It’s been such an eye-opening experience to learn so much about parenting from a new perspective. I hope you will find these tips helpful to your family as well!

1. Get Kids to Do Chores
When Charlotte Siems, mom of 12 kids, spoke about getting her kids to do chores, I was like, it’s not gonna work for me! I grew up in a loving family where my parents would straighten up the house for us everyday, so I literally didn’t know how to do chores until I went to college, when I had to learn everything on my own. So I was determined to teach my own children about chores and responsibility at a very young age. But my observation is that, once they reach school age and their life gets busy, it’s so hard to keep it up. So I finally gave up on this idea. After listening to Charlotte’s talk and being so encouraged again, I was willing to give it a second try. So the next week, I led and trained my 6- and 2-years-old to wash dishes, pick up their toys, put away laundry basket, etc. The time spent on training them is so worthwhile, not only for them, but also for myself. If you’d like to simplify your to-do lists, delegation is a must. There are days when I can just sit at my kitchen table with books and coffee while watching my little ones busy with their chores. What a dream!

2. Create Habits and Be Consistent
Do you struggle with giving instructions to your children so they will obey you? Beverly Parrish talked about how inconsistency in our emotions and consequences can provoke our children. I would love to be a calm and gentle mom, but the reality is, things never get done without me yelling and screaming. But I learned from this workshop that it’s hard for children to obey if they don’t know what to expect. Most importantly, if what we’re doing isn’t working, we need to read for ourselves and explore and do something different. Several tips that she offered were proactively teaching them what calm looks like (define exactly what we expect them to do, and practice!), the interrupt rule (teach them to put their hand on you, then you put your hand on them to acknowledge them, but they need to wait till you can tend to their needs), and immediate obedience (teach your children to attend to your voice, train them and without emotion).

3. Limit Their Screen Time, Offer Alternative Activities
Over these years, I’ve worked so hard to limit our children’s screen time. We read, draw, paint, make messes, play outside all the times. Our TV isn’t on except I’m cooking in the evening when I don’t want to be (constantly) interrupted or I’ll burn the kitchen. Dr. Kathy Koch (my favorite speaker) stated that 20% of our brain are hard-wired while 80% soft-wired, and the process isn’t finished until the age of 25. I guess we all know that too much screen time isn’t good for our kids, but it’s so tempting to let the TV/iPad babysit our kids – it’s just so easy and convenient! Several strategies that she suggested are: 1) Parents should limit their own screen time as well (because children learn from us); 2) Provide alternatives (put jigsaw puzzles or board games out on the coffee table so kids have something else to do); 3) Learn to handle boredom (because boredom is the fact of life and great ideas often come when we allow our brains to be idle).

Are you ready to implement these tips and make small changes in your parenting? Please keep in mind that there are no magic bullets when it comes to parenting. We’re here to guide and train our children, but to manipulate them. And most importantly, don’t give up on these parenting methods before an honest attempt. Good luck!
