Three Gorgeous Locations for Spring Family Photos | Houston Portrait Photographer

April 4, 2019

Aren’t you excited that springtime is finally here? Our family loves planting seeds, colorful flowers in our garden, and we particularly admire the patches of wildflowers on our way home. Newness in the nature, fresh air, pastel colored wardrobe… It is just refreshing this time of the year. In fact, it is the precious but short window when it feels great outside in Houston, Texas.

I offer on-location photographic services all year around. But let me be honest with you, I have sweated in the field during the summer months, and babies/young children really don’t appreciate the wind or the chill in the fall/winter. So if you have been thinking about a Spring Family Photo Session, this is the perfect timing! Before you get in touch with me to schedule your session, here are three gorgeous locations for you to consider. And of course, I’m always open and excited for any new location that you suggest!

1. Seabourne Creek Park

Pros: If you are a nature-lover like me, you will surely fall in love with the scene at Seabourne. Its open area, colorful wildflowers, beautiful trees, butterflies, birds, etc. not only make a gorgeous background for your family photos, but are also super relaxing for many kids as well as your pets. I just can’t praise enough of this location and I love going back again and again.

Cons: I usually ask my clients to step about one inch into the grass and create an illusion in the photos that they are in the middle of a big field. However, if the idea of stepping on the grass sounds gross to you, I totally get it! Also, the walking distance from the parking lot to the shooting locations is about 10-15 minutes. This especially creates a problem during the hot summer months.

2. West University Place

Pros: If you prefer the city look and want to do something fun with your kids, having family photos at WestU is a great option. Evelyn’s Park Conservancy is a small park that can look as pretty as a natural field in the photos. Another thing I like about WestU is that everything is in close proximity. We can drive to Tinys Milk and Cookies in a few minutes, enjoy a cookie (coffee and ice cream if you wish!), and snap some more cute pictures with your kiddos there. I always bring home some Tinys’ cookies to my girls after visiting WestU, because they’re just irresistible!

Cons: Since it is in the city and you can expect people walking around most of the time. But people are very nice and polite there and they understand and avoid photo-booming the session as best as they can. I also find that early morning hours (before 8am) are a little quieter and when the natural light is still soft and creamy. This time option is especially preferably for families with young kids, as they are usually in better mood in the morning, and they wake up so early anyways!

3. Rice University

Pros: I grew up in the suburb and I still live in the suburb. So when my client first told me she wanted buildings in the background for their family session, I felt a little uneasy. But RiceU is the perfect combination of greenery and white marble buildings. I feel like going back to college whenever I shoot there. It’s relaxing, really beautiful, and holds lots of charms and history.

Cons: Don’t be surprised that many couples decide to host their wedding ceremony there. Last time it happened to me, I didn’t want to photo boom other people’s gorgeous wedding so I chose the locations very carefully. It still worked out, but just expect some delays in between the sessions and their music can sometimes be quite loud.
