As moms, we are constantly loving our family behind the scene, and seldom take the time to pamper ourselves. When it comes to picking our outfit for an upcoming family session, we are often clueless and frustrated, because we somehow have lost our feminine identity as we spin our days caring for others. Therefore, I would like to write an outfit post for moms, because you deserve to look pretty and feminine in front of the camera.

Before you continue reading, I should be honest that I am not a fashionable AT ALL. I don’t even know if floral dresses are in anymore, but I truly believe that beautiful things are timeless, and these classic long flowing dresses will never look outdated.

When my clients (usually moms) ask me about what to wear for their session, I often suggest neutral colors, such as cream white, beige, or dusk pink for moms/daughters, and khaki or grey for dads/sons. No bold colors or print, because my style is clean and minimalistic, and my professional experience tells me that these colors will look good on your skin color (i.e. no color cast) and will create a natural and artistic look for your family portraits. However, I understand that everyone has their personal color preference, and not everyone is satisfied with plain, neutral colors. Therefore, floral dresses will be your best friend and here are a few tips for choosing the right one for moms:

  1. The overall color should still be soft, and preferably neutral color. My go-to colors of cream white, beige, and dusk pink will apply, but soft mint may work for this dress.
  2. The floral print can be either subtle or bold. I personally love subtle embroidery. It’s both timeless and elegant.
  3. You can even go with bold color! A lot of my clients love red (as it represents blessing and joy in the Chinese culture), and here is the good news: YOU CAN WEAR RED as long as it is balanced with many other neutral colors.
  4. Choose according to your level of modesty. Be yourself. Be comfortable. No matter what dress you end up choosing, you will look most beautiful if you feel comfortable in your outfit.
  5. The KEY is, everyone else in your family coordinate their outfit color with yours. Often time, we focus all our attention on our children and make sure they look cute in their outfit, and forget about ourselves. Don’t feel guilty if you become the center of attention, and you should be the focus of the portraits, because you have poured so much love and sacrifices into your family. You deserve to look natural, feminine, timeless, and elegant.

I hope these suggestions will help you pick a lovely outfit for your upcoming session. If not, email me and I will be happy to assist you in the choosing your wardrobe.
